Abstract
Objective: To describe the epidemiological profile and trends in hospital admissions for diverticular disease of the intestine (DDI) among individuals aged 60 years or older in the Northeast region from 2021 to 2025. Methods: This is a documentary study based on secondary data extracted from the Hospital Information System (SIH/SUS), covering the population of Northeast Brazil aged 60 years or older, and including variables such as sex, race/color, type of admission, and hospital costs. Results: A total of 3,712 hospitalizations for DDI were recorded in the selected population—3,209 urgent and 503 elective—resulting in 442 deaths. The hospitalized patients were predominantly women (59.4%), aged 80 years or older (23.1%), and of mixed race/ethnicity (75%). A higher hospital mortality rate was observed in the Northeast region (11.91%), alongside the highest number of hospitalizations in Bahia (n=948) and an increase in hospital costs from 2021 to 2025 (59.18%). Conclusion: The rising number of hospitalizations during the analyzed period, combined with the higher mortality rate in the Northeast compared to other regions of the country, highlights the significant burden of the disease and regional inequalities in healthcare.
