Abstract

Objective: To assess the prevalence, risk factors, and consequences of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) among açaí pulp beaters in the Metropolitan Region of Belém-PA. Methods: Cross-sectional study with convenience sampling, including 74 workers evaluated between August 2024 and August 2025 at the Bettina Ferro de Souza University Hospital. Sociodemographic, occupational, and clinical data were collected, as well as audiological exams. Results: Of the 74 recruited, 37 attended the in-person evaluation and 34 underwent complete audiological tests. There was a high prevalence of bilateral sensorineural hearing loss compatible with NIHL, related to prolonged noise exposure, long working hours, and low adherence to regular use of hearing protectors. Common symptoms included tinnitus, difficulty understanding speech, headache, and sleep disturbances. The use of hearing protectors was infrequent and irregular. Conclusion: The findings highlight the negative impact of occupational noise on the hearing health of açaí pulp beaters and reinforce the need for integrated public policies, including health education programs and periodic hearing screening for informal workers. Methodological limitations include the cross-sectional design, convenience sampling, lack of objective measurement of noise exposure, and a high rate of losses throughout the protocol.
