Abstract
Objective: To discuss, based on current scientific literature, the clinical indications, protocols, and longevity evidence of ceramic veneers performed without dental preparation (no-prep) or with minimally invasive preparation, evaluating their advantages, limitations, and impact on remaining dental structure. Bibliographic review: Ceramic veneers without preparation or with minimal reduction represent a significant advance in contemporary restorative dentistry, preserving dental enamel and treatment reversibility. The success of these modalities depends on careful case selection, integrated digital planning, appropriate ceramic material selection — with emphasis on ultrathin feldspathic ceramics and lithium disilicate — and mastery of adhesive protocols. Follow-up studies spanning 5 to 12 years demonstrate survival rates above 90%, provided indications and contraindications are respected. Minimally invasive preparation, limited to enamel, ensures greater bond strength, lower postoperative sensitivity, and better long-term prognosis compared to preparations that invade dentin. Final considerations: The no-prep approach and minimally invasive preparation for ceramic veneers constitute clinically viable and biologically responsible alternatives, supported by growing scientific evidence. Careful case selection and technical rigor are key determinants for the success and longevity of these treatments.
