Abstract

Objective: To analyze the discourses of nurses and physicians regarding care for people living with HIV/AIDS in the context of Primary Health Care (PHC). Methods: This is an exploratory, descriptive, qualitative study involving nurses and physicians in PHC in a municipality located in the Alto Sertão region of Paraíba, Brazil. Data were collected through semistructured interviews between September and October 2024 and analyzed using the Collective Subject Discourse technique. Results: Three central themes emerged: challenges in the care and management of people living with HIV/AIDS in PHC; the need for continuing education for professionals to improve the quality of care; and weaknesses in the continuity of care for people living with HIV. The participants’ accounts revealed that social stigma and fear of exposure create severe barriers to early diagnosis and the establishment of trusting relationships. Participants also pointed out gaps in technical knowledge and humanized care for specific groups, as well as failures in coordination among services, which compromise continuity of care. Conclusion: Care for people with HIV/AIDS in primary health care remains marked by stigma, gaps in training, and weaknesses in care coordination, reinforcing the need for continuing education and the strengthening of continuity of care.
