Abstract
Objective: To analyze the impact on the evolution of septic patients after the implementation of an institutional sepsis protocol in a public hospital in Belém-PA. Methods: Data were collected from 94 patients hospitalized in the medical clinic wards of the Santa Casa de Misericórdia Foundation of Pará between November 2017 and April 2018, using second and third generation antibiotic therapy, the criteria for sepsis recorded in medical records. Results: Of the 94 patients analyzed, the majority had criteria for sepsis, but only 20% of them had established sepsis protocol. The gender most affected was the female, and the most prevalent age group was those older than 58 years. 54.24% of patients with sepsis remained in the hospital for a period greater than or equal to 30 days. Septic patients died in 52.54%, while septic patients with the protocol evolved with the same outcome in 50% of the cases. Conclusion: The results confirm the high lethality of sepsis, alert the need for early diagnosis, the urgency of immediate treatment and adoption of the institutional protocol to strengthen epidemiological data and reduce the morbidity and mortality of sepsis.
