Abstract
Objective: To investigate the beliefs of hypertensive men in relation to pharmacological adherence. Methods: This was a descriptive and qualitative quanti approach research, conducted with 13 men in a family health unit, located in the state of Paraíba. An interview with a structured form was used, and questions based on the assumptions of the Theory of Rational Action as a data collection tool. The interviews were transcribed and proceeded with content analysis, according to Laurence Bardin. Results: Most men believe that taking the medication will prolong life, however, some believe that hypertension is curable. The use of medication due to obligation was highlighted, without understanding the importance of it for health, a factor that results in treatment abandonment. Most individuals have support from their wife to remember taking the medication, which is a positive aspect. Conclusion: The beliefs presented are related to the adherence to medication and quality of life, relevant aspects, which should be known by the multidisciplinary team, so that the obstacles that interfere in non-adherence to drug treatment are understood. This survey enables the construction and implementation of educational and motivational strategies to improve the adherence of hypertensive who use drugs for control.
