Abstract
Objective: To analyze the social stigma and self-image of the person with sickle cell disease (SCD) in the light of national and international scientific literature. Method: Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) from the literature review, with organization of the work in six stages prioritizing the basal structure of EBP expressed by the acronym PICO, namely, Population, Interest, Comparison, Outcomes. The electronic databases consulted were SciELO, MEDLINE, CUMED and LILACS, from January 2013 to January 2018 and the keywords come from the Descriptors in Health Sciences. Results: Studies have shown that the person with SCD has difficulties to socially interact due to the limited information about the pathology by relatives and other social actors. On the other hand, an open field of research on this subject was observed. Conclusion: The discussion of psychosocial issues involving the person with SCD was noticed discreetly in the literature in the last five years. However, comprehensive care, emphasizing the psychosocial aspects, requires a society effort, demystifying concepts, and multiprofessional one, in the quality of service and investment in research and dissemination of findings.
