Abstract
Objective: To evaluate updates on brachial plexus paralysis (POPB) and its therapeutic options. Methods: Bibliographic analysis of scientific production carried out between 2013 and 2018 on updates of obstetric brachial plexus injury and its treatments. The articles were selected by searching the PUBMED, SciELO, and LILACS databases, using descriptors selected in Portuguese, English, and Spanish. Results: Most of the selected articles were published in 2014 and in the PUBMED database. It was observed that the Narakas classification subdivides the types of injury and relates them to the prognosis, with spontaneous recovery predominating. However, when severe, permanent sequelae can be generated, and surgical management in order to nerve restoration is beneficial. Even after primary surgeries, in patients with deficits, it is common to develop contractures, which generates muscle imbalance, with subsequent bone-joint deformities, whereas secondary surgeries and other treatments aim to reduce limitations and provide better functionality of the affected limb. Final considerations: POPB can generate irreversible sequelae on the motor function of the upper limbs, and should be evaluated and diagnosed early, and the most appropriate individualized treatment instituted.
