Abstract
Objective: Identify and describe the subtypes of ischemic stroke in a population of patients admitted to an urgent and emergency unit. Methods: Retrospective, cross-sectional study was performed on consecutive patients admitted to the Fundação Baiana de Neurologia from June 2017 to December 2019 with acute ischemic stroke diagnosis. We analyzed the stroke subtypes based on Oxford shire Community Stroke Project classification, demographic data, and comorbidities. Results: Of 1.115 patients admitted with a diagnosis of stroke, 984 (88.25%) of them were of ischemic type. The mean age was 65.9 ±14 years and 53.5% females. Hypertension was the most frequent risk factor (73.8 %), however there was no significant difference between the several subtypes of the stroke. We identified 39.70% of PACI (partial anterior circulation infarction), 35.10% of TACI (total anterior circulation infarction), 13.20% of LACI (lacunar infarction), and 12.10% of POCI (posterior circulation infarction). We found a statistically significant association between the PACI subtype and the presence of diabetes mellitus (p = 0.028). Conclusion: The partial anterior circulation infarction (PACI) was the most frequent subtype of ischemic stroke and was associated with diabetes mellitus.
