Abstract

Objective: To present the actions a nurse can take during the prenatal period to encourage and support the pregnant women to proceed with the breastfeeding. Methodology: It was used a narrative revision. Thirty articles which discuss the theme were used in this study. Results: It is known that during the pregnancy period, women experience physical and emotional changes. Thus, it is important that health professionals are able to guide them through the puerperal pregnancy cycle and about the exclusive breastfeeding. Although it seems to be a simple process, it is essential that mothers and their relatives have suitable information and instructions in order to guarantee the breastfeeding in a satisfactory way and avoid the early weaning. Final Considerations: Since the nurse is the professional who is closer to the pregnant women, it is necessary that he or she establish a good relationship with them so as to be able to help them with their doubts about the breastfeeding and cares with the new-born baby, creating an efficient action plan which promotes the breastfeeding with no problems. For that, this professional has to be well prepared, as the success depends on the orientations which are given by the nurse since the beginning of the prenatal medical appointments.
