Abstract

The aging process causes changes in the quantity and quality of sleep in more than half of adults over 60 years, negatively affecting the quality of life of these individuals, especially those institutionalized. Several factors such as pain, physical or emotional discomfort, environmental factors and changes in sleep patterns contribute to sleep problems at this age, affecting the health and cognitive performance in elderly day. To evaluate the static and dynamic balance in elderly subjects with sleep disorders. We evaluated the elderly aged over 60 years, of both sexes, institutionalized in Sociedade São Vicente de Paulo – Vila Vicentina Nossa Senhora Aparecida, in the city of Itajubá (MG), through application of the tests Balance Scale Berg, Timed Up and Go Test, Index, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality (PSQI) and Epworth Sleepiness Scale. It was found that seniors who had a good quality of sleep achieved higher scores in tests related to the static and dynamic balance. Considering the results, we suggest that poor sleep quality can affect the performance of daily activities , causing a possible lack of balance or even fall, bringing complication to the elderly population, especially institutionalized.
