Prostate cancer is the third highest incidence among men and sixth most common malignancy in the world. Currently, there has been an advance in the incidence rates of prostate cancer, reaching more than 30% in men over 45 years of age, progressing in approximately 80% at 80 years. Data show that in Brazil focuses prostate cancer 54 cases per 100 000 men. Given the findings in order to analyze the occurrence of prostate cancer in a small city was a retrospective study. The survey data were obtained by the Department of Health of a city in Southern Minas Gerais through the Information System for Notifiable Diseases (SINAN). The data come from case reports of prostate cancer occurred between the years 2008 to 2010. According to the retrospective study, the occurrence was obtained in the years 2008 (n=5) 2009 (n=7) and 2010 (n=8), p=0.3679, with an incidence of 4:10.000, 6:10.000 and 7:10.000 respectively. By comparing the data with the Ministry of Health, the results of this study were within the expected (5:10.000). Thus, prostate cancer is the second highest incidence worldwide and the fifth leading cause of male mortality. In this context it is necessary to continued health surveillance, especially with regard to prevention and promoting human health in order to reduce new cases of prostate cancer.
