Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the weight of the newborn from gestational diabetic pregnant women, through a comparison with metabolically normal pregnant women. Methods: This is a historical cohort, in which patients from the Low and High-Risk services at the School of Medicine of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora were studied. Anamnesis, physical examination and medical conduct data were collected, as well as the newborn's data. Results: 133 patients were studied, 77 patients with gestational diabetes (57.9%) and 56 (42.1%) with metabolically normal. The average newborn weight of patients in the control group were 3180 ± 545 g and diabetic patients were 3277 + 439 g, but without statistical significance (p = 0.361). The comparison between the average newborn weight from patients with diabetes using insulin (3287 ± 350 g) and non-insulin users (3178 ± 474 g) was not statistically significant (p = 0.448). There was no association between maternal weight (initial weight, final weight, weight gain) and newborn weight, assessed through linear regression (p = 0.448). Conclusion: Birth weight was similar in gestational diabetic pregnant women and normal pregnant women, which suggests that with efficient prenatal care, maternal blood glucose is closer to normal, making a difference in maternal and fetal prognosis.
