Abstract
Objective: Present a case report in which a lesion compatible with the diagnosis of schizencephaly in a 26-week fetus was identified during two-dimensional prenatal ultrasound examination. Case details: Second pregnancy of 19 years and 10 months, with a single topical pregnancy of 26 weeks and 4 days, went to the health service to perform an ultrasound examination suspecting pregnancy. The patient, had not had any previous exam or prenatal consultation during her current pregnancy, and was unable to inform the date of her last menstrual period. During the examination, an apparent lesion in a bilateral cleft was observed at the fetal cephalic pole, connecting the ventricular system and the subarachnoid space, with schizencephaly type II as the diagnostic hypothesis. Final considerations: Despite being a rare anomaly, schizencephaly is a neuronal disorder that can generate clinical manifestations of various severities, ranging from the presence of seizures that can be controlled, to severe deficits in nervous and motor development.
