Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the antimicrobial activity of ethanol extracts from different parts of Caesalpinia pulcherrima plant: leaves, flowers and pods. Methods: were collected leaves, flowers and fresh pods from Caesalpinia pulcherrima plant. The collected plant material was then separated into different containers for oven drying. To obtain the ethanol extract of the plant, leaves, flowers and pods are crushed, and after the procedure, introduce a volume of 15 ml of alcohol 70% for each 1 g of plant material. For test in vitro of antimicrobial activity, we used two ethanol extract solution, 1.25 mg/mL and another at 2.5 mg/mL. The technique used in the study was diffusion disk Muller-Hinton agar front of the microorganisms: Enterobacter aerogenes (ATCC 13048), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853). Results: The study of the antimicrobial effect of ethanol extracts of leaves, flowers and pods of Caesalpinia pulcherrima has proven antimicrobial activity for all tested microorganisms, the best results were for the ethanol extracts of solutions at 2.5 mg/mL of flowers, against to microorganisms: Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853). Conclusion: It can be concluded that plants of Caesalpinia pulcherrima ethanol extracts have antimicrobial activity against the Enterobacter aerogenes, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. However, it is recommended continued exploration of the antimicrobial potential of this species.
