Abstract

Objective: to analyze the role of the nurse in the paternal role during the breastfeeding process. Method: this is a descriptive, exploratory study, supported by an integrative review of the literature. The study sample consisted of 394 scientific papers. The search for the data was done in online databases, being these: Scientific Electronic Library Online, Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences and Digital Library of Nursing. The collection of these articles for the composition of the sample was carried out during the months of April to June of 2016 through a structured form of own elaboration. Results: breast milk has many advantages for both the child and the mother, although they address important factors that favor the weaning process. The father was singled out as a fundamental basis for the strong influence on the woman's decision to breastfeed. Final considerations: nursing professionals are the family reference regarding clarification of information regarding breastfeeding, but in the studies investigated, they show lack of preparation in the care of parents, especially the father.
