Abstract

Objective: To implement the Neonatal Infant Pain Scale (NIPS) neonatal pain assessment scale with the Nursing team of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and promote an educational strategy on the implementation of the scale and management of the multidimensional pain assessment instrument. Methods: A qualitative study of the action research type was carried out using Charles Maguerez's arc as a basis for problematization theory. An intervention (conversation wheels) was carried out for guidance and the use of the NIPS Scale (Neonatal Infant Pain Scale) was applied to the nursing team (30 professionals). The implantation took place from the 1st to the 8th of April 2021, with 6 NB being observed every 3 hours. Results: With the explanations, the team felt motivated and prepared for the daily use of NIPS, as it was able to recognize the NB's vital signs and record it in the medical record. Conclusion: The present study was of great value since, based on it, nursing professionals felt more secure and motivated to work with the NIPS Scale, improving the communication process and with its use, there was an improvement in care and in NB pain control.
