Abstract
Objective: To understand the reasons related to the non attendance of the women to the puerperal consultation. Method: Exploratory-descriptive study, with qualitative approach. Data collection took place in November 2017 in a Basic Health Unit and a Family Health Strategy in a municipality in the central region of Rio Grande do Sul, using a sociodemographic questionnaire and a semi-structured interview with six women who were postpartum. Results: Data were analyzed through Content Analysis. It was found that most of the women performed a satisfactory number of prenatal consultations, as recommended by the Ministry of Health, however, it was identified that the information related to the importance of the puerperal consultation was not clarified by the professionals who provided care during the prenatal care. Conclusion: Professionals need to be committed to health education, developing a methodology understandable for puerperal women, applying the principles recommended in the protocols of the Ministry of Health, including puerperal consultation.
