Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of hypohydration in teenagers in the capital of Piauí. Methods: This was a descriptive and transversal study, with quantitative approach, conducted with teenagers from three public schools at the analyzed cit. Were included in the research teenagers between 10-19 years who were present by the moment of the data collecting. Teenagers with organic and cronic diseases and diagnosed with mental illness were excluded. The hydration state was evaluated by the osmolarity result in urine isolated sample. To determinate the urinary osmolarity, was used a OsmometerAdvance freezing method model 3w2 (Advanced Instruments Inc, Massachusetts, EUA). To urine color self-assesment, was delivered to the participants the Urinary Staining Scale. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee. Results: the prevalence of hypohydratation (urine osmolarity >800 mOsm/kg) was present in 55,5% of teenagers. In which, 33% with intense hypohydratation; 22,5% maximum hypohydration. From this, 63,2% were male and 36,8% female. The ages with more hydrated representants were: 10-13 years and 18-19 years. There was, with significant statistic, relation between darker urine and urine osmolarity >800 mOsm/kg. Conclusion: In a state with hot weather there was a high prevalence of hypohydration among the adolescents analyzed.
