Abstract
Objective: To review and analyze the practice of implementing virtual reality in intensive care units. Methods: Literature review of the last 7 years carried out based on a search in Academic Google, Scielo and Medline using the following terms: virtual reality, intensive care unit, digital health, virtual reality in the ICU and virtual reality in pain . After obtaining and analyzing data and applying the inclusion and in-depth analysis criteria, 15 scientific articles were included in this study. Results: Virtual reality refers to simulated experiences intentionally presented to the individual's senses. In the intensive care unit, it works by reducing the stress experienced by the patient, the patient's family and health professionals, and in pain control. Virtual reality is well tolerated by patients and allows for satisfactory control of self-reported anxiety. Final considerations: Innovative technologies such as virtual reality have shown potential to improve rehabilitation, discomfort, pain and psychological changes in patients treated in the intensive care unit. However, it is necessary to emphasize that more studies are needed.
