Abstract
Objective: To analyze the literature on the characteristics of Burnout Syndrome in medical students. Bibliographic review: BS is a reaction to chronic emotional tension from dealing excessively with people, fundamentally characterized by depersonalization, emotional exhaustion and reduced perception of self-efficacy. SB rates are higher among medical students when compared to the general population. The tension to fulfill all the demands of the medical course, adaptation difficulties, the extensive work and study hours, the information overload, the idealization of the importance of the doctor and the medical student, in addition to the lack of time for leisure time among family and friends are triggering factors for the syndrome. Final considerations: Thus, actions in the scope of public health are needed that aim at restructuring the medical curriculum in order to encourage humanization in the student and that there is also a multidisciplinary follow-up of these students aiming at prevention and early identification of the signs of the syndrome.
