Abstract
Objective: To describe the case of a patient with massive pulmonary thromboembolism, the main nursing interventions, and the therapies used in urgency and emergency. Case details: This is a case report article that started from the experience of nurses about the care given to a patient diagnosed with massive pulmonary thromboembolism in an emergency hospital in Goiânia. A male patient, admitted to the hospital with syncope and sweating, underwent an echocardiogram that showed an extensive thrombus in the right heart chambers. He presented respiratory and hemodynamic instability requiring oxygen therapy and later intubation, vasoactive drugs and emergency thrombolysis. The main nursing diagnoses for the reported case were: ineffective breathing pattern; risk of shock and risk of bleeding from which interventions were prescribed to stabilize the condition and prevent the risks listed. Final considerations: The role of nursing in monitoring cases of massive pulmonary thromboembolism involves early diagnosis, monitoring and careful interventions in case of clinical deterioration, agility in care, use of thrombolytic therapy and knowledge about the indicated treatment, contributing to a good outcome of the case.
