Abstract
Objective: To identify the importance of nurses in providing self-care to patients with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus Methods: This is a descriptive study of the integrative review type that constitutes a specific method, whose objective is to analyze the knowledge built on previous Research on a given Theme. Results: 12 articles were selected to compose the literature review in which they brought the figure of the patient with type 1 DM in its multiple dimensions and as clients who need integrated care mainly by the professional nurse. In which, the triad of assistance is composed: client (protagonist of their own care after nursing guidance) + empowered nurse and family that supports and encourages the patient with DM. Final considerations: The presence of the nurse as an indispensable agent in the provision of self-care to patients with type 1 DM was evident, as they have the scientific and directed capacity to act in the guidelines and follow-up of these patients, Due to the complexity that is given to care of these patients, it was observed the need for more studies now aimed at care and creation of protocols that help in providing the Systematization of Nursing Care (SAE) to patients with type 1 DM.
