Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the mortality rate from preventable causes in children under five years of age in the southern health region of Mato Grosso from 2007 to 2020. Methods: Time series study, with data from the Information System on Live Births and Mortality Information System. The inferential analysis was performed using the Stata®16 statistical package. Results: There were 1,613 deaths of children under five years old, the average infant mortality rate from preventable causes was 7.77/1000NV. The preventability group with more deaths in children under one year old corresponds to those causes that can be reduced by adequate attention to pregnancy and the newborn. There was a downward trend in the mortality rate from preventable causes -6.53 (95% CI: -9.84; -3.09) and non-preventable causes -5.64 (95% CI: -8.80; -2 .38) among children under one year old, and stability in the age group of one to four years for preventable causes -4.52 (95% CI: -13.10; 4.90) and non-preventable causes -2.75 (95% CI: -10.56; 5.74). Conclusion: It is necessary to increase the quality of access to prenatal, childbirth and postpartum care, with articulated, intersectoral and comprehensive actions to develop a prevention, diagnosis and treatment strategy capable of impacting the reduction of infant mortality.
