Abstract

Objective: To review the literature on tumor markers and the risk of recurrence of differentiated thyroid cancer in adult patients. Literature review: Serum thyroglobulin (Tg) measurement is a test with several limitations, which can determine falsely low results. Despite this, it is an easily accessible test and its use in clinical practice contributes to early screening for recurrence or persistence of DTC when there is still no presence of structural disease detectable on imaging methods. After initial surgical treatment, all patients must be staged and stratified according to the risk of recurrence for DTC with assessments including tumor markers and, when necessary, imaging tests to screen for residual disease. Final considerations: Thyroglobulin and antithyroglobulin are tumor markers with a fundamental role in monitoring patients after surgical treatment of thyroid cancer. However, other strategies can be used to improve screening for structural DTC disease, using imaging tests such as computed tomography, MRI, full body research with Iodine 313 and Pet Scan.
