Abstract

Objective: To assess the knowledge and students' behavior at the Health Sciences Center of a Brazilian public university regarding psoriasis and nutrition. Methods: A quantitative and qualitative cross-sectional study with 218 students, 76 from nutrition and 142 from other courses. Structured questionnaires developed in Google Forms® were sent to participants through WhatsApp®. Quantitative data were performed in frequency distribution and qualitative data, in the IRAMUTEQ Software, by word cloud and similitude analysis. Results: Of the students, 8.2% reported that the disease was contagious; 36.6% were unaware of its frequency and 9.1% answered that the disease has no treatment. Feelings of sadness, fright/amazement, something very bad, and disgust were reported when viewing photographs of psoriasis. Of stigmatizing behaviors; 18.34%, 23.85%, and 36.69% reported doubt about whether they would accept food prepared by an individual with psoriasis, whether they would go into a swimming pool, and whether they would date with this individual, respectively. The main nutritional orientations were: balanced diet; adequate consumption of water, fruits, fibers, and whole foods; avoid processed and ultra-processed foods and encourage diet sources of antioxidant compounds. Conclusion: Psoriasis has characteristics unknown to students, who reported stigmatizing behaviors and unspecific nutritional conduction.
