Abstract
Objective: To describe the socio-professional characteristics of urban garden workers, as well as their knowledge and handling of pesticides in a municipality in the interior of Maranhão. Methods: A descriptive, exploratory, quantitative study conducted with 130 urban garden workers in a municipality in the interior of Maranhão. Questionnaires were administered on occupational status and knowledge of pesticides. The data obtained was analyzed using descriptive statistics and RStudio software. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee. Results: The sample was made up of a male majority (59%), married (52%) with incomplete primary education (53%). The survey revealed that (58%) of the workers had never received guidance on the proper use of pesticides, while (42%) had already received such guidance. In addition, (63%) recognized that the use of pesticides can harm human health in some way, while (37%) did not recognize these risks. Conclusion: It can be concluded that urban garden workers face constant risks associated with the use of pesticides, including the burning of packaging, as well as low levels of education and exposure to occupational hazards. The geographical focus restricted to a single region and the need for more comprehensive investigations were limiting points.
