Abstract

Objective: To evaluate self-care strategies and clinical factors in preventing lymphedema in women after mastectomy. Methods: Cross-sectional study, with a quantitative approach, carried out between August and September 2022, with 54 women diagnosed with breast cancer, who underwent mastectomy or quadrantectomy surgery, and were treated at a Cancer Center in the countryside of the northeastern Brazil. The data that were obtained through interviews and measurements of the homolateral arm to surgery supported the application of Chi-square and Fisher statistical tests using the free statistical software R®. Results: Most women responded positively in relation to strategic practices that aimed to prevent lymphedema, except for carrying out complementary treatment on the ipsilateral arm, practicing physical activity, and handling sharp or hot equipment. Among the analysis of the variables involved in the clinical and general profile, both physical inactivity and abnormal BMI increased the chance of seroma formation. Conclusion: Access to information and awareness is the main strategy to ensure preventive self-care practices, better chances for early identification of potential complications and effective interventions.
