Abstract
Objective: To analyze the clinical characteristics and 12-month progress of pediatric patients with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) followed at a Brazilian CF center. Case details: Among the patients followed at a pediatric CF center from 2020 to 2022, five (7.1%) presented severe COVID-19. These patients had a mean age of 17 years old (SD ±0.9) at the time of SARS-CoV-2 infection, resulting in hospital length of stay ranging from 2 to 51 days (25.6 days on average, SD ±15.1), requiring respiratory support and ICU admission in three cases. The analysis revealed a temporary reduction in Body Mass Index (BMI), compromised severity scores, and lung function decay after the infection. Partial recovery of lung function and BMI was observed in two of the patients who started CFTR modulator therapy during the study period. Despite acute complications, the 12-month evolution was considered satisfactory, and there were no deaths. Final considerations: Despite the negative impact on the health of the studied CF patients during acute SARS-CoV-2 infection, there were no deaths or negative repercussions during the subsequent year after the infection.
