Abstract

Objective: To analyze the prevalence of dental caries in a social institution in Fortaleza, which assists children in a state of social vulnerability. Methods: A cross-sectional, observational study with a quantitative approach. It was examined 100 children in early childhood, aged 5 and 6 years of both genders, in first semester of 2023, to identify the presence of caries, as well as a socioeconomic form adapted from the SB Brazil 2020 project was applied to those responsible. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistic. Results: It was observed that 66 (66%) analyzed children had caries, 80 (80%) of the interviewed guardians received government aid, 21 (21%) living with an income of up to one minimum wage and 37 (37%) did not complete the elementary school. In addition, it was found that deciduous molars (27%), followed by permanents (7,6%), were the teeth most affected by caries. Conclusion: Social factors such as income, education and occupation of those responsible, associated with a diet high in sugar and inadequate oral hygiene contribute to high carie prevalence in the participants.
