Abstract
Objective: To assess age- and gender-specific trends and social factors in stroke mortality in the state of Piauí, Brazil, from 2011 to 2021. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study assessing stroke mortality in Piauí between 2011 and 2021. The number of stroke-related deaths during the study period was obtained from DATA-SUS using the Mortality Information System (SIM). The data was categorized by age and gender. Results: Between 2011 and 2021, 26,147 people died from stroke in Piauí. Piauí went from a mortality rate of 70.34 in 2011 to 65.42 in 2021. Mortality was higher among males. In 2011 there were 1086 male deaths and 1023 female deaths and in 2021 1080 and 1071 respectively. In terms of the age/sex ratio and mortality, there was a higher mortality rate for males up to the age of 80 and from that age onwards there was a reversal. Those indicated as brown represented the majority of deaths. Conclusion: Hospital death is the most common, followed by home death, and undetermined stroke was the most frequently recorded on death certificates.
