Abstract

Objective: To analyze the morbidity profile of hospitalizations for diabetes mellitus in the stat eof Paraíba. Methods: This study is descriptive, epidemiological, cross-sectional, and ecological, with a quantitative approach. Results: Between 2012 and 2021, there were 28,491 hospitalizations related to diabetes mellitus in Paraíba. In the 3rd Macro-region, Patos - Sertão / Sousa - Alto sertão, hospitalizations increased significantly by 102%, while in the 1st and 2nd Macro-regions, João Pessoa and Campina Grande, there were decreases of -15% and -13%, respectively. Hospitalization rates per 100,000 inhabitants increased in all regions, with predominantly public health care in Macro-regions 2 and 3. The majority of hospitalizations were in women (58.7%), with variations by age group. According to calculations using linear trend equations and coefficients of determination, there was a modest trend of decreasing hospitalizations and morbidity rates in all regions. Conclusion: According to the data, there was a significant growth in both the number of hospitalizations and the overall average of hospitalizations per one hundred thousand inhabitants in the last ten years in the state of Paraíba. The predominant kin color was brown. There was a higher prevalence in females; however, there was a decrease in hospital morbidity rates.
