Abstract

Objective: To describe the good evolution of a young patient admitted to a private hospital with acute thrombophlebitis of the transverse, sagittal and jugular vein sinuses after full anticoagulation. The use of anticoagulants in these cases is not well defined in the literature. Case detail: Young patient, 14 years old and male, with thrombosis of the sagittal and transverse sinuses resulting from a complication of mastoiditis due to acute otitis media. Diagnosed by imaging examination after clinical worsening even during outpatient treatment. He was initially treated with antibiotic therapy, but his evolution was not favorable during hospitalization. Full anticoagulation was then necessary for a good outcome of the case. Final considerations: Infections such as sinusitis, otitis and mastoiditis can, although rarely, lead to venous sinus thrombosis. Its treatment with antibiotics is well validated and widely used, but anticoagulation is controversial.
