Abstract
Objective: To describe the prevalence of anxiety among medical students in Brazil. Bibliographical review: Anxiety is defined as the pathological fear of future events, that is, those that are beyond the individual's ability to control, since one can only interfere with actions in something that happens in the present moment. Furthermore, in generalized anxiety, this fear does not have a single object as its focus, but rather multiple themes that bring more complexity to the picture. In the subtypes of anxiety disorders, there is a more specific direction of the emotion, such as agoraphobia (whose concern centers on the aversion to open places) or separation anxiety (whose suffering comes from the idea of separation between the affected individual and something or someone). Final considerations: When starting their university journey, medical students are subjected to new challenges that can lead to emotional exhaustion, making them susceptible to the emergence or worsening of anxiety. Thus, it was observed that the state of mental health is directly associated with aspects such as the presence or absence of resilience, motivation, learning strategies and chance of giving up.
