Abstract

Objective: To analyze the prevalence of seropositive pregnant women for HIV and syphilis and the behaviors performed during prenatal care, correlating with gestational and maternal age, prenatal visits, birth weight, and sex of the neonate. Methods: Prospective observational descriptive study of pregnant women, seen in a maternity hospital in a city in the state of Amazonas who were HIV and syphilis positive between June 2017 and June 2018. Epidemiological data were collected for exploratory data analysis with tabulation and presentation in tables and graphs. Results: A total of 100 pregnant women tested positive for HIV and 302 for Syphilis, corresponding to the prevalence of 0.31% and 0.93%, respectively. There was a statistical difference in maternal ages and types of delivery, in the former the Syphilis group presented a median (23 years) lower than HIV (25 years). And with respect to the type of delivery, the HIV group had normal delivery percentage of 14% and Syphilis of 60%. Only 4 cases of HIV/syphilis coinfection were identified. Conclusion: Although the prevalence rates of pregnant women with HIV and Syphilis were low during the study period, the data collected are worrisome because, besides identifying failures in prenatal care, they may suggest a deficiency in the measures of control of seropositive patients.
