Abstract

Objective: To assess the health consequences for frontline workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: An integrative review was conducted, following the steps recommended by the Joanna Briggs Institute, including the formulation of the research question, document selection, data evaluation, and analysis. Studies published between 2020 and 2024, without language restrictions, and full scientific articles on COVID-19 infections, occupational health, and occupational exposure were included. Results: The analyzed studies revealed a high prevalence of burnout and acute stress among healthcare professionals. Factors such as female gender, multiple employment bonds, and long working hours were associated with these conditions. The lack of adequate infrastructure and emotional preparation exacerbated the situation. Additionally, many workers were exposed to the virus both in the workplace and in community settings, highlighting the need for rigorous protective measures. Final Considerations: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the vulnerability of healthcare professionals to burnout and acute stress, underscoring the urgent need for structural and emotional interventions. Improving working conditions, providing psychological support, and adopting effective risk mitigation practices are essential to ensure the health and well-being of these professionals.
