Abstract
Objective: To investigate the association between Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) and obstetric practices, by clusters of maternal age, in maternity hospitals in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of 1,088 women. Cluster analysis was used to generate groups with information on the presence or absence of GDM and mean ages in each group. The associations between the diagnosis of GDM (exposure) and each obstetric practice (outcomes) were estimated using Chi-square tests by clusters of maternal age. Results: Two clusters were generated with mean ages of 22 and 33 years. In the group of young women with GDM there was a higher proportion of: analgesia during delivery (50%), use of forceps (23.08%), no breastfeeding in the first hour (60.00%), no skin-to-skin contact (52.00%), induction of labor with intravaginal medication (37.50%) and ruptured pouch before hospitalization (66.67%) (p<0.05). In older women, not receiving a diet (16.67%) and antibiotic use in labor (24.14%) were more frequent in women with GDM compared to those without GDM (p<0.05). Conclusion: It can be concluded that GDM can be a potential risk factor for the use of non-recommended obstetric practices and younger women are more exposed to these practices.
