Impacto de uma intervenção educativa em primeiros socorros para gestantes e puérperas na prevenção da mortalidade infantil

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the impact of first aid education on the management of domestic accidents. Methods: Randomized educational intervention carried out with 60 pregnant women over 28 weeks and postpartum women up to 90 days postpartum, from August 2023 to May 2024, applied in a single educational session, preceded by a pre-test. The same test was applied to the control group. After six months, women from both groups were interviewed about the occurrence of accidents. Analyzes were carried out using the Stata 16.0 Program. Results: More than 80% of participants had not received guidance on first aid. Half had already experienced a risk situation with children and, among these, half did not know how to proceed. After the course, the number of correct answers in the post-test increased by 36%. Six months later, the performance was 91%, 31% experienced choking or falls with children, 100% took appropriate action and there was no serious outcome. In the control group, 27% reported falling or choking, only half knew how to intervene appropriately and did not experience fatal events. Conclusion: The study shows the positive impact of a low-cost and easy-to-implement intervention in reducing severe outcomes in cases of accidents in children.
