Abstract

Objective: To describe the sensitivity profile of clinical isolates of Candida and Cryptococcus spp. to antifungals and investigate biofilm formation on different abiotic substrates. Methods: The study was carried out with biological samples from patients admitted to Hospital Units in São Luís-MA, from January 2020 to January 2024. The samples were collected to identify the species fungal infections by the technique of MALDI-TOF/MS. Next, sensitivity tests to antifungals and virulence tests were carried out, such as: biofilm formation on abiotic surfaces in 96-well plates and catheters. Results: In the antifungal sensitivity test, approximately 92.8% of the samples were sensitive to amphotericin B, fluconazole, itraconazole and voriconazole. Furthermore, in the biofilm formation test on a polyurethane catheter, all samples were capable of producing biofilm with an emphasis on the GCM and IJST strains that were characterized as strong producers of biofilm on plaque. Conclusion: It is expected to increase knowledge about the antifungal sensitivity and virulence profile of yeasts isolated from reference hospitals. This will allow the creation of municipal and state prevention programs to reduce outbreaks and costs related to patient management.
