Abstract
Objective: To describe the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of children hospitalized with COVID-19 and assess the correlation between symptoms and length of hospital stay. Methods: A cross-sectional study included 48 patients ≤12 years old, hospitalized with COVID-19 between April 2020 and June 2021, at a pediatric hospital in northern Brazil. The majority were male children (54.2%), from Macapá, with a mean age of 24 months. The average duration of hospitalization was 5 days for those with mild symptoms (35.4%) and 10 days for those with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) (64.6%). Results: Supplementary oxygen was required in 22.9% of patients, 2 children (4.2%) were admitted to the ICU, and only one case of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome (MIS) was confirmed. The main radiological finding was bilateral interstitial infiltrate. There were no deaths recorded during the study. There was an association between the presence of respiratory discomfort and hospital stay ≥7 days (p 0.017; Cramer's V 0.4). However, no association was found between other symptoms and length of hospital stay. Conclusion: The study indicated low RT-PCR testing rates during the virus dissemination phase.
