Abstract

Introduction: Palliative care is indicated for patients with serious, progressive and incurable illnesses that threaten the continuity of life, and must be started within eight weeks of diagnosis, which includes cancer. The nurse stands out in this type of care, playing a fundamental role in the integration of its principles into oncological care to improve the quality of life of the individual and their family. Objective: To understand the role of nurses in managing palliative care for patients admitted to an oncohematology unit. Method: Qualitative research, carried out in an oncohematology inpatient unit, with 12 nurses. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, between June and July 2018, with content analysis. Results: Nurses carry out care management, leadership, supervision, evaluation and guidance activities. They coordinate actions with the multidisciplinary team, discuss patient cases and work to control physical and non-physical symptoms. Conclusion: Nurses manage the unit and care, playing an essential role in the integration of palliative care and oncohematology, incorporating these principles into their practice, early and continuously, overcoming challenges.
