Abstract

Objective: To describe the coverage of neonatal screening tests in Brazil based on data from the National Health Survey (PNS) and correlate it with sociodemographic variables. Methods: This is a quantitative and descriptive study using a subsample of data collected by the 2019 PNS. Absolute and relative frequencies, as well as their confidence intervals, were analyzed. The coverage of the tests and the receipt of results were estimated, considering demographic strata of age, race/skin color, income, region, and area. Prevalence differences were assessed using Pearson's Chi-square test with a significance level of 5%. Results: A higher proportion of Black children, low-income children, and children residing in the North and Northeast regions and urban areas was observed. The lowest coverage found was 61.9% for the heart test. There was variation in timely coverage and access to results. Inequities in coverage, timely access, and access to results were identified. Lower coverage rates were associated with race/skin color, income, region, and area of residence. The coverage for complete neonatal screening was 49.1%. Conclusion: Access to the heel prick test was higher than the others. The study also revealed sociodemographic disparities in neonatal screening in Brazil, highlighting the urgency of strengthening intersectoral policies.
