Abstract

Objective: To analyze the risk factors associated with the death of adult patients hospitalized with AIDS in a reference hospital. Methods: A cross-sectional study involving patients over 18 years old, of both sexes,  hospitalized with AIDS, in the year 2019. The outcome of death and explanatory variables categorized into sociodemographic, clinical, and specific HIV aspects were evaluated. The association between risk factors and the outcome was tested using logistic regression. Results: Among the 116 patients involved in this study, age (OR: 1.1188 CI 95% [1.0461; 1.2170], p=0.0030) and opportunistic infections (OR: 10.0377 CI 95% [1.9426-75.2189], p=0.0111) were risk factors for death. The variables adherence to therapy (OR: 0.9290 CI 95% [0.8958-0.9539], p < 0.001) and T-CD4+ lymphocyte levels between 50 and 100 cells/mm³ (OR: 0.4804 CI 95% [0.0612-3.7268], p=0.0323) were protective factors against death. Conclusion: For each year of age, the risk of death increased by 11.8%, and it was approximately ten times higher in the occurrence of an opportunistic infection. The risk of death decreased by 7.1% when the patient had good adherence to treatment and by approximately 90.8% with T-CD4+ lymphocytes between 50 and 100 cells/mm³.
