Abstract

Objective: To assess the prevalence of (in) food security among the academic community of a federal university in southern Brazil and correlate it with socioeconomic and demographic factors. Methods: Cross-sectional study, with data collected through online forms between September 2020 and January 2021, addressing socioeconomic conditions, demographic factors, and the Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale, including 1,693 individuals. Results: The prevalence of food insecurity was 26.4%. Multiple regression revealed significant associations between food insecurity and institutional affiliation, race, and family income. Undergraduate students and staff had a prevalence of food insecurity 2.212 and 2.083 times higher than faculty members, respectively. Individuals self-identified as non-white had 32.9% higher prevalence of food insecurity, and income was identified as a protective factor. Conclusion: The study demonstrated a considerable presence of food insecurity among the academic community, highlighting the need for future studies to monitor and guide specific actions for this population.
