Abstract
Objective: To assess the prevalence of obesity among the Brazilian population aged 18 and older, by national macroregion, and its percentage variation across the pre-pandemic, pandemic, and post-pandemic periods of Covid-19. Methods: This is a cross-sectional, descriptive study analyzing data from the Surveillance System of Risk and Protective Factors for Chronic Diseases via Telephone Survey (Vigitel), covering the period from 2018 to 2023. Percentage variation between pre- and post-pandemic periods was calculated using the average obesity prevalence for each period. Results: The Northern region exhibited the highest obesity prevalence across all three periods, considering both sexes. The greatest prevalence variation between pre- and post-pandemic periods was observed in this same macroregion (24.58%), followed by the Southern region (24.3%). Among women, the largest prevalence variations between pre- and post-pandemic periods were noted in the Southeast (33%). In the same region, the smallest prevalence variation was observed among males (1.68%). Conclusion: There was an increase in obesity prevalence in all Brazilian macroregions during this period. The Southeast and North regions showed the largest variations between the pre- and post-pandemic periods.
