Abstract

Objective: To evaluate new cases of congenital syphilis (CS) and the determining aspects for its incidence in the city of Passo Fundo, RS, between 2015 and 2019. Methods: This is a cross-sectional observational study and data collection was performed on the platform DATASUS. Results: During this period, 739 pregnant women were diagnosed with syphilis and 413 newborns were diagnosed with CS. The highest prevalence of infection was in women aged between 20 and 29 years. In 49% of cases the diagnosis was made in the third trimester of pregnancy; in 43% of the cases the stage of the maternal disease was ignored and for 74% of them the prescribed treatment was penicillin. Regarding the cases of CS, 86% of the mothers underwent prenatal care and 45% of them had the treatment considered inadequate; 29% of pregnant women did not undergo treatment. Conclusion: The incidence of CS in the period was higher than that recommended by the Pan American Health Organization, highlighting the need to improve prenatal care and early diagnosis.
