Abstract
Objective: To investigate the literature on the efficacy of treatment with gestrinone and medroxyprogesterone in the management of endometriosis. Methods: This is an integrative literature review. The electronic data collection occurred in the Pubmed and LILACS databases. The following Health Sciences Descriptors (Decs) were used: “Endometriosis”, “Pelvic endometriosis”, “Treatment”, “Treatment of endometriosis”, “Gestrinone”, “Medroxyprogesterone”, “Progestogen”, “Oral contraceptives”, “Antiprogestogens”. Results: Eleven articles were selected, which considered the use of gestrinone effective at a dose of 1.25 mg or 2.5 mg twice a week for the treatment of endometriosis. Despite this, a total of 67% of the recruited patients reported side effects associated with the use of the medication. The use of medroxyprogesterone should be questioned and the need to institute this therapy should be considered, given the similar results to the use of placebo in patients with endometriosis. Final considerations: The treatment of patients with endometriosis should always be individualized. The literature suggests that gestrinone and medroxyprogesterone are safe and effective therapeutic options for the treatment of endometriosis. However, this interpretation should be made with caution, since the quality of the evidence currently available is low, with high methodological biases and unclear.
