Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the nutritional implications of polypharmacy in hospitalized elderly people. Method: This is a cross-sectional, descriptive study, carried out from August to October 2021. The variables collected were: socioeconomic factors, body mass index, food and medication consumption. Results: 30 elderly people participated in the research. Mostly, 93.3% of this target audience had a chronic non-communicable disease (NCD). The majority had two or more chronic diseases and used five or more medications (66.7%). In relation to BMI, the elderly with the greatest use of medication had a nutritional status between low weight (31%) and normal weight (31%). Comparing the food consumption of the two groups of elderly people, it is possible to state that the group that uses polypharmacy has a more deficient intake of energy, nutrients and fiber, compared to the sample that uses fewer medications. Conclusion: Although there was no statistical difference between nutritional status and polypharmacy, the majority of patients who used five or more associated medications were classified between underweight and eutrophic. In addition to this result, another relevant factor that affected the health of polymedicated elderly people was the inadequate consumption of energy, fiber, macronutrients and micronutrients.
