Abstract

Objective: To assess the irrational use of vaginal creams in the female population of the city of Belém, Pará. Methods: This was an analytical study using quantitative and qualitative methods, approved by the Research Ethics Committee and carried out using a questionnaire made available on the Google Forms platform, from July 1 to August 31, 2024. Results: The study was conducted with 103 women, aged between 18 and 70, with an active sex life. The survey indicated that 45% of the participants were aged between 25 and 35, 70% said they were in a stable relationship, 82% reported having already had an episode of vaginal discharge. Of these, 22% had used medication that had been used before. The most prevalent vaginal infection was candidiasis, present in 55% of cases, of which 28% had self-medicated. Of these, 37.5% chose to use nystatin vaginal cream as a form of treatment. Conclusion: We can conclude that there is a prevalence of 28% of women who have self-medicated at some point. This percentage has a significant impact on health, since excessive use can unbalance the flora, cause microbial resistance and aggravate infections.
