Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of propranolol compared to other available therapeutic approaches, focusing on short- and long-term clinical outcomes. Methods: Integrative literature review in the PubMed Central (PMC) database, using the search strategy: ((Infantile hemangiomas) OR (IHs)) AND (Propranolol) from 2019 to 2024. After the initial search, 397 studies were identified and submitted to selection criteria. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 13 articles were selected to compose this study. Results: Propranolol has been shown to be highly effective in reducing the size and proliferation of hemangiomas, with minimal adverse effects, when compared to other therapies, such as corticosteroids or surgical treatment. Early administration and strict monitoring are essential for therapeutic success. Regarding safety, adverse effects were, in most cases, mild and manageable, although pre- and post-treatment cardiac care is recommended. Final considerations: Propranolol is a safe and efficient option in the treatment of infantile hemangiomas. However, it is recommended that future studies explore optimized dosages and possible therapeutic combinations for refractory cases.
